How tip math works

The tip is a straightforward percentage of the bill: tip = bill × tip-percent ÷ 100. The grand total is the bill plus the tip, and the per-person amount is the grand total divided by the number of people splitting it. Pre-tax versus post-tax conventions vary by region — this calculator works on the bill amount you provide, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if you tip on subtotal, or the after-tax total if you tip on the full charge.

Why use this calculator?

Mental tip math is easy in the abstract and surprisingly fiddly in practice — especially when the bill is uneven, the party is large, or you want to round to a clean per-person number. This tool removes the guesswork: tap a preset, set the headcount, and the per-person figure appears instantly. Like every Nulumia calculator, the math runs in your browser and the result is encoded in the URL so you can paste it into a group chat.

FAQ

What is a standard tip percentage?

In the United States, 18–20% is standard for sit-down restaurant service, 15% is acceptable for counter-service or below-average experiences, and 22–25% rewards exceptional service. Tipping norms differ widely by country — this calculator does the math in any percentage you choose.

Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Either is acceptable in the US. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is slightly more economical and is the convention many financial advisors recommend; tipping on the post-tax total is simpler and often the default that POS systems suggest. Enter whichever amount you choose to tip on.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Set the 'split between' field to the number of people sharing the bill. The grand total is divided equally and each person's share is shown in the per-person row. For uneven splits (one diner ordered an expensive entree), calculate each portion separately rather than splitting evenly.

Is this calculator private?

Yes. The math runs entirely in your browser. The bill amount, tip percent, and headcount are passed via URL query string only — they never reach a server, and we run no analytics that capture them.
