About the Crested Gecko
Rediscovered in 1994 after being thought extinct for nearly a century, the Crested Gecko (Correlophus ciliatus) is now a beginner-friendly reptile staple thanks to one unusual trait: it thrives without UVB lighting if fed a complete commercial diet (Pangea, Repashy). Captive lifespan runs 10–15 years, with well-kept individuals reaching 20. The "crests" are eyelash-like skin projections above the eyes, and the species' hallmark — once-shed tail does not regenerate fully. Cresties are nocturnal arboreal jumpers from New Caledonia, comfortable at room temperature (22–26 °C) with no specialty heating in most homes. Calculating your crested gecko's human-equivalent age helps spot early senior signs (slower feeding response, less climbing) and adjust husbandry accordingly. This calculator uses peer-reviewed reptile veterinary lifespan data.
How Crested Geckos age
Through life, a Crested Gecko moves through hatchling (0-0.5 yr) → juvenile (0.5-2 yr) → adult (2-8 yr) → senior (8-20 yr); the early years carry the highest growth rate by a wide margin. Skeletal maturity, immune calibration, and behavioural shape are all set during the juvenile phase, which is why husbandry errors in the first years compound for life. Adulthood is the long stable plateau most owners enjoy, and the period where preventive care delivers the most return. Senior stage usually arrives at 70-80 % of average species lifespan — for this species, that is roughly age 12. Reaching the species' upper lifespan range typically depends on excellent nutrition, regular veterinary screening, and consistently meeting published husbandry guidelines.
Senior Crested Gecko care tips
- 20-gallon long terrarium with multiple hiding spots; vertical setup for cresties.
- Commercial gecko diet (Pangea, Repashy) with occasional gut-loaded insects for protein.
- Cool ambient 22-26 °C; avoid daytime above 28 °C — leads to heat stress.
- Mist nightly to maintain 60-80 % humidity; check substrate stays slightly damp.
- Quarterly weight check; sudden loss is the earliest sign of illness in geckos.
Common Crested Gecko health concerns
- Tail loss (regenerates partially)
- Crested gecko tails do not regenerate fully — handle gently and avoid grabbing the tail.
- MBD from poor calcium
- Metabolic bone disease causes deformity; dust insects with calcium and provide low-output UVB.
- Floppy tail syndrome
- Crests on smooth glass develop spinal deformity; provide horizontal climbing surfaces with grip.
