Tentang hamster
Di antara hewan peliharaan berumur panjang, hamster (Mesocricetus / Phodopus spp.) menonjol: hewan pengerat nokturnal soliter dengan siklus hidup pendek namun jelas. Dalam kondisi perawatan modern, individu biasanya hidup 2-3 tahun, dan kualitas perawatan dekade pertama menentukan batas atas usia hidup lebih dari genetika.
Bagaimana hamster menua
Sepanjang hidup, hamster melewati anak (0-0.1 yr) ⇒ remaja (0.1-0.3 yr) ⇒ dewasa (0.3-1.5 yr) ⇒ senior (1.5-3 yr); tahun-tahun awal membawa laju pertumbuhan tertinggi.
Tips merawat hamster senior
- Single-level cage of at least 1 m × 50 cm; bin cages outperform commercial cages.
- Wheel diameter 28 cm or larger for Syrians, 21 cm for dwarfs; smaller wheels cause back curvature.
- Deep bedding 20 cm or more for tunnel-building behaviour.
- Diet of seed mix, occasional protein (mealworm, plain egg), small fruit pieces.
- Senior care from age 1.5 — softer foods, lower wheel access if mobility falters.
Masalah kesehatan umum pada hamster
- Wet tail (proliferative ileitis)
- Stress and bad sanitation in young hamsters cause fatal diarrhoea; quarantine, oral fluids, and antibiotics within 24 hours are critical.
- Tumours
- Mammary, lymphoma, and adrenal tumours appear in seniors; surgery is rarely advised, comfort care is the standard.
- Cheek pouch impaction
- Sticky foods or sharp bedding compact pouches; flush under sedation if eversion fails.
